Makeup Minerals: The Natural “Goodies” and “Baddies” in Your Everyday Cosmetics

Makeup minerals can be confusing. Because of all the media coverage everybody really wants to use natural mineral makeup. But not all makeup minerals work the same. Some of the most common are at best ineffectual. If you choose to use these mineral makeups, they may cause some difficulties.

We all want to get the most out of our mineral makeup. However, this type of makeup isn’t good for everybody and you may not want to switch over entirely. Earth minerals may be what they are looking for. Or are the only looking for the anti-aging benefits? Maybe they just want to stay away from the problems that makeup minerals can cause.

You need to understand the ramifications of the mineral content of your makeup. See below for a short list of makeup minerals. You will understand your makeup’s contents after reading this.

Zinc and zinc oxide
Pure mineral makeups usually contain these products. They are natural sunscreens. They also can smooth out your features and hide wrinkles. These minerals won’t hurt your skin in their pure forms.

Titanium dioxide
In most mineral makeups this is a common ingredient. It smoothes irregularities in complexion If it is in mineral makeup, it may also help relieve acne and rosacea. Watch out for imitation ingredients as they will result in the makeup being less hypoallergenic.

Mica
Mica is what puts the anti-aging factor in mineral makeups. Look for this mineral when buying your pure mineral makeup. This mineral distracts the attention away from skin problems. When this mineral is added to makeup, it is ground up so fine that you can’t tell its there. You can also find it in many non-mineral makeup anti-aging and camouflaging products.

Bismuth
There has been controversy when using Bismuth in mineral makeups. It is a natural mineral. But it has to be processed in order for it to be used in makeup. It is very hard to just grind this mineral into a powder. There are some that say it should not even be an earth mineral. Users tend to really love the “glow” that it creates. However, if you tend to sweat or have sensitive skin you may not want to use mineral makeups containing this mineral, as it will make you itch.

Talc
One of the most often used minerals is talc. It has long been used in consmetics. Nonetheless, quite a few people are allergic to talc. Its main role is as a filler. You have likely been using talc if you use one of the more common makeups. More often than not, mineral makeups exclude talc even though it is a makeup mineral because it is known as a common allergen.
